7 jewelry gifts for him we'd actually give this Christmas (and 2 we wouldn't)

Seven men's jewelry gifts we'd give this Christmas, from a 7mm Cuban to engraved cufflinks, plus two we'd tell you to skip.
7 jewelry gifts for him this Christmas

Every year around this time our inbox fills up with the same message, written a hundred different ways: "I have no idea what to get him. Help." Last December one woman in Laval sent us a photo of her husband's nightstand (a watch, a wedding band, a pile of receipts) and asked what would actually get worn. That's the right question. Not what looks good in a gift box. What he'll still have on in March.

So here's our honest list. Seven pieces we'd give the men in our own lives, two we'd steer you away from, and why. Everything here is made of 316L stainless steel, so you don't have to worry about it turning his wrist green by Boxing Day.

1. The 7mm Cuban Link Bracelet

If you only read one section, read this one. The 7mm Cuban Link Bracelet is the piece we'd hand to almost any guy who doesn't already wear jewelry. It's wide enough to look intentional and narrow enough that he won't feel like he's wearing a costume. It's around $85, and it's engravable.

Our opinion: 7mm is the sweet spot for a first bracelet. We sell plenty of 10mm and 12mm Cubans, but those are for guys who already know they like a heavy wrist. For a gift, go 7mm.

2. The Matte Modern Dog Tag

The dog tag is the most-engraved item in our shop, and it isn't close. The Matte Modern Dog Tag has a brushed finish that hides scratches, which matters because he'll wear it every day. The flat surface gives you room for 4 short lines on the front and more on the back.

Our most common Christmas engraving on this one? Kids' names and birth years, one per line. Simple. He'll read it every morning.

3. Beveled Edge Cufflinks

Cufflinks get a bad reputation as the gift you give when you've run out of ideas. We get it. But the Beveled Edge Cufflinks are different for one reason: you can engrave initials on the face, which turns them from generic into his. At around $70 they're also one of the easier pieces to get right, because there's no sizing.

Only buy these if he actually owns French-cuff shirts, or has a wedding or work event coming up. Otherwise they'll sit in a drawer. We'd rather tell you that now.

4. Grey Herringbone Leather Bracelet

Some guys hate the idea of a metal chain on their wrist. For them, leather works. The Grey Herringbone Leather Bracelet weaves grey leather through a steel box chain into a flat 7mm band, so it looks more put-together than a plain cord. The clasp is engravable inside and out.

Quick warning. Leather and water don't mix well over time. If he swims every morning or works with his hands outdoors, pick a steel bracelet instead. Leather's for the guy who'll take it off before the shower.

5. Textured Black Inlay Cross Pendant

Faith-based pieces are a big part of what we ship in December. The Textured Black Inlay Cross Pendant measures 28 x 18mm, which reads clearly from a few feet away without being oversized. It comes on a 22-inch rounded box chain, and the smooth back takes a short engraving like a date or a verse reference.

A note on length: 22 inches sits just below the collarbone on most men. If he's slim or under about 5'8", it may hang a little low. That's an easy swap, so don't let it stop you.

6. Sailor Link Bracelet

Here's the one we'd pick for the guy who already owns a Cuban and wants something different. The Sailor Link Bracelet uses 5mm oval links, so it's slimmer and a bit more refined. It stacks nicely next to a watch, which is honestly where most men end up wearing their bracelets anyway. It comes in silver or gold.

7. Interlocking Click-in Clasp Bracelet

This one's for the man who likes a secret. The Interlocking Click-in Clasp Bracelet has a slim 4mm profile, and the clasp is smooth on the inside, which is where the engraving goes. Nobody sees it but him. We've had customers engrave the date they met, a private nickname, even a set of GPS coordinates.

It's one of our newer pieces, and it's quickly become a favourite on our team for exactly that reason. The message stays private.

The 2 we wouldn't buy as a surprise

A 14mm Cuban ID bracelet. We sell it. We like it. But we don't recommend it as a surprise gift. At 14mm it's heavy, and the plate is large. It's a strong look on the right guy, but if he's never worn a bracelet, a piece this size often ends up in the box. Let him pick this one himself, or start smaller.

A ring when you don't know his size. Every January we exchange a stack of rings that were bought as Christmas surprises. Guessing a man's ring size is harder than it sounds, because knuckles vary and fingers swell in the cold. If you really want a ring, borrow one he already wears on the same finger and measure the inside diameter in millimetres. If you can't do that, pick a bracelet or a pendant instead. No guesswork needed.

How we'd choose between them

If you're stuck, this is the shortcut we use when someone calls us:

  • He's never worn jewelry: the 7mm Cuban or the dog tag.
  • He already wears a watch: the Sailor Link, worn on the other wrist or stacked.
  • He wears suits for work: the cufflinks, engraved.
  • He's private and sentimental: the Interlocking Click-in Clasp with a hidden message.
  • He doesn't like metal on his wrist: the leather bracelet.

And for engraving, keep it short. Our rule of thumb is about 15 characters per line on a bracelet and 4 lines on a dog tag. Long messages get tiny, and tiny engraving is hard to read. If you want more ideas, the full Christmas gifts collection has everything we've picked for this season in one place.

A word on budget

Everything on our list lands between $60 and $100, and that's on purpose. In our experience, the price of a man's first piece of jewelry has almost nothing to do with whether he wears it. Fit and comfort do. A $60 cross pendant he likes beats a $300 chain that pulls at his neck hair.

If you want to spend a bit more, don't go bigger. Go personal. Add the engraving, or pair two pieces that work together, like the dog tag with a matching bracelet. Two smaller gifts that he wears together feel more thought-out than one heavy piece.

One more thing we see every December: people buy gold-tone because it photographs well under the tree. If he wears a silver watch or a white-gold wedding band, stick with silver steel. Mixing metals can look great, but it's a choice he should make, not one you make for him. When in doubt, match whatever he already has on his wrist or finger.

Our recommendation

If we could only choose one, it's the 7mm Cuban Link Bracelet with his initials or a date engraved on the clasp. It works for nearly every age and style, it's sized in a way that's hard to get wrong, and 316L steel (EN 1.4404) holds up to daily wear without tarnishing. Order early if you're engraving, because December gets busy for us, and you don't want to be the person emailing on the 22nd. We've been that person's last hope more than once. It's stressful for everyone.
